Fort Myers breaks ground on new fire station

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Fort Myers city leaders broke ground Thursday on a new, multi-million dollar fire station.

It will replace the old Fire Station 1 on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The department has outgrown the location, which they been using for more than 50 years.

The new station will be on the old Lee County Library property on Central Avenue. The land has already been cleared and construction crews are getting to work. It will be four stories and about 32,000 square feet. The current one is about 19,000 square feet.

Fire chief Trent Bowen says the increase in space is the biggest feature of the new station. They will now be able to fit their ladder trucks at Station 1, which they can’t do right now.

He also says they’ll be able to move their fire prevention bureau into the location, and have a big classroom space to continue to offer CPR classes to the community.

This station has been a long time coming, first proposed about nine years ago.

It will cost about $7.5 million and is expected to be complete in September 2016.
