Michael Spiegel found guilty of double murder

Published: Updated:

UPDATE: Michael Spiegel was found guilty of second degree murder in the deaths of his ex-wife Marilyn Spiegel and her fiance, Harry Carlip.

Spiegel was also convicted of arson for setting their boat on fire after the murders.

The 72-year-old showed no emotion as the verdicts were read. The jury deliberated for about three hours. He will face at least 25 years in prison.

Marilyn Spiegel’s family members rejoiced in the courtroom after the verdict came out. Michael Spiegel said he was innocent, and the full story did not come out in court, even though he did not testify in his own defense. The judge cut off his statement, and said he can speak at his sentencing in late September.

FORT MYERS, Fla.- Closing arguments happen today in the Michael Spiegel trial.

Spiegel is accused of killing his ex-wife and her fiance on their boat on Fort Myers Beach in May 2014.

The jury will get the case after the closings, and could reach a verdict today.

Spiegel’s defense is not denying he did it, but trying to prove he was insane at the time.

Thursday, Spiegel’s son and brother both testified about his mental state and said he was having mental health issues long before the killings happened.

They say he never would have hurt his ex-wife if he were in the right state of mind.
