MGN BOSTON (AP) – The Boston Red Sox have hired former Detroit Tigers boss Dave Dombrowski as the team’s new president. The Red Sox also said general manager Ben Cherington is leaving the club, two years after building the 2013 World Series champions. The Red Sox announced during their game against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night that Dombrowski, who was let go by the Tigers two weeks ago, would take over immediately. Cherington “declined the opportunity to continue as general manager,” the ballclub said. Larry Lucchino announced earlier this month that he would be stepping down as president and CEO. Despite winning the 2013 World Series – their third in a decade – the Red Sox are on their way to their third last-place finish in four seasons.
