Arrest made in shooting near Elementary School

HENDRY COUNTY, Fla. – One person is under arrest for a shooting near a southwest Florida elementary school. A teen was shot Monday afternoon.

Tuesday, some parents are in disbelief after learning about a shooting across the street from where they drop their kids off everyday; Labelle Elementary.

“It is a concern because, this is a quiet town, we are not used to that violence stuff,” says Abell Ortiz, a concerned parent.

Deputies say a student called 911 Monday saying he’d just been shot at Jaycee Lions Park. They Hendry County Superintendent tells Wink News parent have called the school all morning asking if it’s safe for their kids to come to school.

“The whole incident is terrible,” says Paul Puletti, Superintendent, “children are safe at school, this didn’t happen at school, it happened after school hours.”

The district has security plans they routinely practice in-case there is an emergency.

“We have entered into an agreement with a sheriff’s office so that we are the few districts that has a resource office on campus,” says Puletti.

While the district takes their part to ensure the safety of kids, they ask parents at home to do their part as well.

“We take their children for eight hours a day and they are out of their control, but once the school leaves parents really need to take control and be aware of what their kids are up to,” says Puletti.
