‘Golf boarding’ trend reaches SWFL

NAPLES, Fla.- There’s buzz surrounding the game of golf and it involves a new way to get around the green.

“I’ve tried wakeboarding, I’ve tried skateboarding, I’ve tried surfing and I failed at all of them. This came real easy,” said EJ McDonnell, director of golf at the Bonita Bay Club in Naples where golf boards are becoming a game changer.

“It’s just a different way to play golf, it’s healthier. So, we said we are just going to go ahead and do this,” said McDonnell.

Golf tends to move at a slower pace, but golf boarding is speeding things up while keeping the traditions of the game. Two rounds of golf on a golfboard can be played in under five hours.

“You will see them get on there with a death grip. There is usually a 90 second to two-minute learning curve and then they relax and loosen up.”

The device is a combination of golf cart and skateboard. To use it, you simply push a lever and use your body weight to make a turn. The front of the golf board has a place to carry your golf bag.

“It’s a great work out, it’s a great way to play golf. It opens up a whole new experience for golfers of any age,” said Nichol Conklin.

The golfboards are ready for members at the Bonita Bay Club to rent. Buying your own golf board will cost around $6,500.
