MARATHON, Fla. (AP) – A man is dead after his 1973 single engine Piper plane crashed near Marathon in the Florida Keys.

Monroe County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Becky Herrin says the crash happened early Monday on the Gulf of Mexico side of Marathon.

A man called 911, saying he heard the crash shortly after midnight and got in his boat to find out what happened. He told deputies he found debris about a mile offshore. He then found the body of 53-year-old Edward Elgin.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission responded and found the plane underwater. The Federal Aviation Administration will be sending an investigator to the scene.
