FORT MYERS, Fla.- Sweet treats are delicious, but sugar is not always the best for your health. You may not even realize how much you’re consuming.

It’s your health now and Jennifer Vargo is explaining why changing the labels on our food could help.

Things to know about sugar:
– 1 teaspoon of sugar is equal to 4 grams
– The AHA suggests an added-sugar limit of no more than 100 calories per day (about 6 teaspoons or 24 grams of sugar) for most women and no more than 150 calories per day (about 9 teaspoons or 36 grams of sugar) for most men.
– Added sugar contains no essential nutrients and is bad for your teeth
– Added sugar is high in fructose, which can overload your liver, causing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
– Sugar can cause insulin resistance
– Sugar is a leading contributor to obesity in both children and adults
