FORT MYERS, Fla.- In just a few weeks, school will start and thousands of students will have brand new school supplies for their first day.

But, buying school supplies can be tough for some parents.

Sunday, the 16th annual Big Backpack event was held and it was a complete success. WINK News was a proud sponsor.

It’s the moment everyone was waiting for, pure excitement as the doors that led to the Big Backpack event finally opened.

“I like getting the stuff for school and I love going to school,” said Kiya.

“It gives me enough school supplies for school,” said Ashlei.

Inside, thousands of free school supplies for Southwest Florida students and free hair cuts! WINK News Anchor Amanda Hall was one of the event’s emcees.

“It’s sad on one hand to see the families that are in need. On the other hand, it’s incredible of the outpouring amount of community support,” said Connie Ramos-Williams, Media Chair for the event.

Many got in line before the sun came out and waited hours to make sure they got their school supplies. Billy and his family were first in line getting to the Harborside Event Center at 5:30 a.m.

“I’m good, tired, and excited,” said Billy.

Several parents say times are tough and they need a little help to get by.

“The school supplies get expensive with the clothing and the supplies and everything, it does add up,” said Debra.

“Things are tight nowadays and it’s nice to see a community doing this, it’s hard out there,” said Steven Costantino.

The event is put on by the Multicultural Centre of Southwest Florida. The founder says this is more than just a giveaway.

“It’s an opportunity for community to come together, all the cultures that we have in the community like Latino, Anglo, African American, everyone to come together in a welcome, friendly environment,” said Leonardo Garcia.

Lee County Commissioner John Manning, members of the Fort Myers Fire Department, local police and deputies handed out the first few backpacks.
