PUNTA GORDA, Fla. – Nearly 11 years after Hurricane Charley destroyed homes in Charlotte County, some of those residences are being rebuilt. Construction crews are currently rebuilding The Verandas of Punta Gorda, located off Airport Road. “I hope I can get in there because this building is about 40 years old and it needs work done,” said Connie Jellison, whose home was one of more than 150 low-income housing units destroyed by the hurricane. Funding to rebuild the homes — in the form of federal tax credits– were recently provided to the Punta Gorda Housing Authority. Meanwhile, many senior citizens were left scrambling to make ends meet, said Loraine Hulber, authority director. “They’re living on less than $1,200 a month and the rent that they’re paying is $900 a month,” she said. “You can do the math, they have no money for food or medical supplies and that just breaks your heart when you realize what they’re living on.” About 140 people will move into the new homes in 2016, Hulber said. “We’ve been waiting a long time,” said Hulber, “here in our business, we hear from people daily, desperately seeking housing that they can afford.”
