Lee County Mosquito Control District prepares to fight pesky insects

Published: Updated:

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- With all of this rain, it’s just a matter of time for the infestation of mosquitoes to arrive. But, it may take a couple weeks to fight all of the pests.

It doesn’t take long for standing water to give life to those insects that drive most residents insane. The Lee County Mosquito Control District tells WINK News it can’t start spraying for at least another week. But there is a way to get ahead of the fight.

“You’re going to have some folks that are really going to be miserable for several days before we can actually give them relief,” said Shelly Redovan.

Over the next two weeks, the mosquito control district says the bugs will be all over Southwest Florida.

However, you can also help make them go away at the click of a button. By going to the district’s website, you can make a service request by entering your address.

With the entire county seeing rain, it’s going to take a lot of patience.

“It’s going to take us a couple of days to get to everybody.”

The good news is, so far there have not been any reports of mosquito-borne illness in Lee County.

“Right now, we are not seeing any virus in our chickens or in our traps where we collect the adults and we look for that genetic material of virus. We’re not seeing any of that, so that’s a good thing right now.”

In the meantime, keep the bug spray on hand and the swatter nearby. And don’t forget to head to the web to keep the bugs off.
