BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) – A hearing officer will determine whether a dog that bit part of a boy’s ear off should be euthanized.

The officer has until the end of July to issue an opinion in the case that began June 4 when a black lab mix named Padi bit a 4-year-old boy at The Pet Clinic in Bradenton.

The child was visiting the clinic with his baby-sitter when the attack occurred. Padi belongs to clinic owner Paul Gartenberg.

Manatee County Animal Services took custody of Padi during an investigation under the state’s Dangerous Dog Law.

The incident occurred while the boy was throwing toys to the dog.

Some 30 people attended the hearing to speak on behalf of the dog.

Officials say the boy will require additional reconstructive surgery on his ear.
