Mysterious letter warning of crime making the rounds in the Cape

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A local resident seems to be taking matters into his own hands, with a letter warning neighbors of illegal drug activity.

“I’d question it. There’s some weird stuff going on in the Cape,” said resident Ray Roberts, while looking at the letter warning him of “severe drug activity in his surrounding neighborhood.”

It’s addressed “Dear civilian” and goes on to say multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, and DEA, are aware of what’s going on.

The letter says it’s speaking on behalf of the Cape Coral Police Department.

“Personally I can’t imagine a police department would put a letter like this out.”

That’s because they didn’t.

“That has nothing to do with us,” said Sgt. Dana Coston.

He says the letter was brought to them by someone living in the Bella Vida community. The resident had gotten the letter signed by a “concerned neighbor” in the mail.

“When I first saw this, I thought we have somebody in the neighborhood who is very angry and upset and wanting to do something. For that, I can applaud them,” said Coston.

But the letter goes on to call out a specific house and urges neighbors to call Cape Coral police.

“The second thing I thought though is, what if they got it wrong?”

Coston says they investigated the home and found nothing. He says police look into any claims of illegal activity, but sending a letter like this, could create more of a problem.

“Like anything where you are talking about somebody, or starting a rumor, or spreading information, is that eventually, it might get back to the person. And then we may have a situation where we have a neighborhood dispute,” said Coston.

The Cape Coral Police Department posted the letter on Facebook as a reminder for residents to run their problems by the police first.
