Bras for survivors of domestic violence

Published: Updated:

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- To some, a bra is just a bra. But, to survivors of domestic violence, a bra can be a life changing.

Soma is taking in your new and gently worn bras and donating them to women who need them most. The goal is to gather one million bras.

“We were all like, a little kid in a candy store. It was so exciting, the bras were beautiful,” said Camille Green.

Giving can be quite rewarding.

“It changed my life for the good. Gosh, it was just so exciting, even though it’s just a bra,” said Green.

Green is a survivor of domestic violence and the proud owner of some new bras.

“I was in a domestic violence case with my children’s father, my husband.”

The donated bras are helping her overcome a lot of heartache.

“I was so happy, not only myself but my daughter too. Those are things that she needed,” Green told WINK News.

“It sounds so simple because it’s just a bra, but these women have left their homes usually with just the clothes on their back,” said Soma President Laurie VanBrunt.

Now, Soma is collecting bras to help out. It’s part of their “Giving is Beautiful” campaign, changing a woman’s life one bra at a time.

“We don’t want any woman to choose between buying a bra and putting food on the table,” said VanBrunt.

“We came with just the clothing on our back,” said Green.

It’s the largest bra donation of its kind.

“They are the least donated item that we receive. They are very important,” said Jennifer Benton, Chief Executive Officer for ACT.

These bras are being donated to women’s shelters such as ACT.

“A bra means everything. The way it makes you look, you feel comfortable.”

To date, Soma has collected 980,000 bras. The “Giving is Beautiful” campaign will go through August 5.

You can donate your bras to Soma stores at Bell Tower, Coconut Point, Fifth Ave in Naples, Miromar Lakes and Waterside Shops.
