New fire safety messages on display on Fort Myers Beach

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- Important fire safety messages are now on display. Island businesses are helping officials spread the word after a deadly fire.

WINK News sat down with the Fire Marshal to find out what he hopes the messages will accomplish.

“It’s a very successful way of getting our message out,” said Captain Ron Martin.

In response to the tragedy that killed long-time Fort Myers Beach resident Joanne Finney, new fire safety messages are being shown around town.

“They are identifiable issues that are common in all residential structure fires particularly in the most recent fatal fire,” said Martin.

The messages are simple. Test your smoke detector, have two escape routes from your home and if it’s trash, throw it out.

“I think it’s great. Someone sitting at a bar enjoying Fort Myers Beach, listening to music, they see the on screen reminder of smoke detectors and that drops a reminder. I haven’t checked my smoke detector in a while, I should check it.”

The Fire Marshal tells WINK News these three things were part of the problem when Finney’s home went up in flames.

“The community has really been engaged and we want to continue for the community to be engaged and to become our partners in safety,” said Martin.

Beach businesses like Royal Scoop on Estero Boulvard and Plakas in Times Square are a few places where these messages can be seen.

“It demonstrates the resolve and the commitment our businesses community has to the citizens, the visitors and to the firefighters on Fort Myers Beach.”
