FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) – A Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter crew rescued eight boaters who were stranded in the Everglades.

Sheriff’s spokesman Mike Jachles says three people, including an 11-year-old boy, were on an airboat that ran aground Saturday afternoon. They called family members for help.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports the second airboat reached the stranded boat around 9 p.m. Saturday with a supply of gas and some water and soda. The two boats trudged along for about 12 miles, looking for a way out. They eventually called another friend, asking him to bring extra gas.

Officials say the third boat launched around 11 p.m., but soon ran aground.

Around noon Sunday, a 911 call alerted officials. The boaters were found with the help of cell phones and GPS coordinates.
