Construction to begin soon on Golden Gate Blvd. expansion

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- A portion of Golden Gate Boulevard in Golden Gate Estates will soon be widened to four lanes.

The 2-mile stretch runs from Wilson Boulevard to 18th Street Northeast. Crews will be begin construction in just a few weeks.

“I support doing it from Wilson all the way down, we need it out here,” said Bob Raines.

Raines has owned Sunshine Supermarket on the corner of Golden Gate Boulevard and Wilson Boulevard for five years.

He says while the project is welcomed, he would like to see more.

“Why can’t we squeeze a few more bucks to take it on down two more streets?”

WINK News has learned the county will continue the expansion to Everglades Boulevard, but not for a few more years.

The first phase of the expansion is a more than $19 million project.

It also includes adding curbs and gutters along the roadway and medians and turn lanes at every side street. Bike lanes and sidewalks will be added on both sides of the road and the bridge over the Golden Gate Main Canal will be widened to four lanes as well.

“You spent that money two years ago to redo the bridges, now we’re gonna tear them up and take them to four lanes, isn’t that a waste of money?” asked Raines.

With more drivers on the road, the expansion is supposed to help relieve the traffic congestion.

The project is expected to take two years to complete.
