Law enforcement training specifically for PTSD-related situations

FORT MYERS, Fla.- People at a Fort Myers apartment complex are back in their homes after a man barricaded himself inside with weapons.

Police say the man is a combat veteran in his late 20s with sever PTSD.

It took about three hours for a negotiator to get him to come outside of his home at the Park at Veneto apartments near Edison Mall.

First responders tell WINK News they’re increasingly dealing with PTSD-related issues.

“We are hearing a lot about this going on in the nation with all these guys coming back. It’s tough, so we train for it and we prepare for it,” said Lt. Jay Rodriguez with the Fort Myers Police Department.

The FBI looked at statistics on hostage and barricaded standoffs in the past 20 years. They found 6 percent involved a veteran or active duty military and those numbers are expected to rise.

Rodriguez says they’re taking classes and programs to learn more about dealing with veterans who have PTSD. He says if time allows in a crisis, police will match a negotiator to a suspect with a similar background and that’s exactly what they did on Tuesday morning.

“Same negotiator the entire time who happens to be an ex-Army veteran himself so there was a good rapport there. We’re out there for you. This was a little bit of a greater extent but you know if you need help, call your resources. You can even call us we’ll help you out,” said Rodriguez.

Michael Plainte is a combat veteran who works with the Wounded Warrior Anglers organization in Lee County. He tells WINK News the transition to civilian life is extremely difficult and that veterans need more support than what just the VA can offer.

“When you’re taking it all on yourself and you’re alone doing it all, it’s difficult to deal with. You don’t have anyone who understands you to talk about it,” said Plainte.
