3 possible bait dogs found recently in SWFL

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- New developments in a disturbing animal cruelty case.

WINK News first told you about Indie last week, a bait dog who had its nose bitten off. Now we’re learning, two more dogs were dumped in the same area.

“We have three different cases now, Collier, Lee, and Hendry County where we’ve seen the scar patterns on the animals. Severe wounds on the animals that are all consistent with dog fighting,” said Jennifer Galloway, executive director of the Gulf Coast Humane Society.

This week, the humane society is taking in Sparkles, a dog with wounds on her neck consistent to brutal dog bites.

“We have to start stepping up when we see these things and letting the authorities know so that they can do their job.”

Galloway says dog fighting is happening in Southwest Florida and she hopes getting the message out will bring the tips in.

“We want folks to call Crime Stoppers if they have any information.”

A third dog was found near the Collier and Hendry County lines. The same spot where Indie and Sparkles were found. It’s unclear if the third dog was used in dog fights, but he does have scars on his legs.

“We’d like to find out what exactly happened and we’re taking this very seriously,” said Darcy Andrade, director of the Collier County Domestic Animal Services.

At least four dogs have been found since January. Although there have not been many answers, momentum is growing.

Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers says tips have been pouring in and they tell WINK News, the incident with Indie is living proof of how major the problem is.

Crime Stoppers hopes to expand it’s outreach across the area to put a stop to dog fighting. If you have any information, you can remain anonymous by calling 800-780-TIPS (8477).
