LEE COUNTY, Fla.- A man who robbed an elderly woman at a Perkins in south Fort Myers will spend 20 years in state prison.

On Thursday, Charles Harner was found guilty of the robbery and battery of a person age 65 or older.

Authorities say back in January, the victim and her husband were headed to their car in the restaurant’s parking lot when a man pushed the woman and grabbed her purse.

When the suspect tried to run away, the victim’s husband attempted to get his wife’s purse back, at which point the robber assaulted the man.

“Violent offenders preying on senior citizens belong in one place – and that’s exactly where Mr. Harner is headed,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator.

Harner will now be transported to a state prison after spending the last six months behind bars at the Lee County Jail.
