Naples firefighters rescue kite surfer from the Gulf of Mexico

NAPLES, Fla.- A frightening event turned into an incredible rescue near the Naples Beach Club as an experienced kite surfer almost got swept out into the Gulf of Mexico.

“First time I ever had to get rescued, 13 years!”

Only WINK News cameras were rolling as Naples firefighters rescued tired and winded kite surfer Rich Gardner.

“I don’t think I would’ve made it if these guys hadn’t come out.”

Gardner was kitesurfing on the Gulf Wednesday night when the wind died and his kite fell out of the sky and into the water.

“There’s no way I could relaunch it. I was swimming it in, but I wasn’t making much ground because the kite filled with water, so it was like towing a boat.”

At the same time, a massive storm started rolling in.

“Once the wind goes offshore it would have grabbed the kite and start blowing
me out.”

Luckily, people standing on the beach saw what happened and called 911. Within minutes, firefighters swam out with surf boards to save him.

“Believe me, when I saw them pull up, I was happy. I’m really greatful, these guys did a great job,” said Gardner.
