Scammers prey on Estero High School

ESTERO, Fla.- Scammers are targeting south Lee County businesses and using Estero High School as bait.

Monday, WINK News got a hold of a faulty advertisement that the Lee County School District is calling a scam. The advertisement tries to persuade business owners to spend their money to support Estero High School.

“This scam was out there encouraging businesses to buy football banners for the stadium at Estero High School,” said Christina Ross, CEO of the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce.

The offer letter asks businesses to buy banners to help fund the school with new sport equipment and additional scholarships to student athletes. The scammers signed the letter as Jeff Sommers, beloved Estero High School coach who passed away in May.

The Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce says a business in Estero found out the advertisement was a scam the hard way. The company is now out $400.

The City of Estero and the Bonita Springs Chamber of Commerce are alerting businesses to help put a stop to it.

“We have businesses in Bonita, Estero, North Naples and Fort Myers. We really cover a broad spectrum in both counties and so when we put out a call like that, we are able to cover many different school and many different businesses so hopefully people will watch out for each other,” said Ross.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.
