COCOA, Fla. (AP) – Authorities have identified a 15-year-old boy who was killed at a central Florida gas station after he shot at a Highway Patrol trooper and the trooper returned fire.

Zane Terryn and his 16-year-old girlfriend stopped at a gas station near Cocoa Sunday and the trooper noticed the lights on their vehicle were out. When FHP Lt. Channing Taylor approached them, Terryn shot him in the shoulder. Taylor returned fire, killing the teen in self-defense.

Deputies say Terryn and his girlfriend planned to drive to her hometown in Ohio to commit suicide.

Taylor has been released from the hospital.

The 16-year-old girl was taken into custody and charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and second-degree felony murder.
