Fort Myers Beach council approves new noise ordinance

Published: Updated:

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.- With a close 3-2 vote, the Fort Myers Beach Town Council approved a new noise ordinance to help regulate noise levels on the island, especially bars and restaurants playing music late at night.

The new rules allow music at 75 decibels until 10 p.m. but then it must go down to 72 decibels.

WINK News first told you about this issue back in April because there was no enforceable law on the books for noise level on Fort Myers Beach. The new law will be easier for deputies to monitor.

Some council members who voted against it tell WINK News they are worried the new rules will hurt the tourism industry on the island. Councilman Alan Mendal also says town leaders and Lee County deputies checked out some bars and restaurants Saturday night and all were in compliance.

The mayor requested a review of the ordinance in six months.
