Coast Guard suspends search for missing diver

CAPTIVA, Fla. – The U.S. Coast Guard confirms a male diver approximately 50 years old was still missing as of Sunday.

The Coast Guard and a search team from a local fire department searched for the diver at the Mowhawk Reef dive site which is about 27 nautical miles west of Captiva Island.

The search was unsuccessful and was suspended around 11 a.m. on Sunday.

One of the three divers who was in that search is firefighter Diana Hernden.

Hernden dives for Ioana-McGregor’s dive rescue team. She said it’s tough leaving rescue missions without finding the missing person.

“Leaving the scene,  unfortunately there’s definitely a sense of a heavy heart that you couldn’t affect the change. You didn’t find out there anybody, you know nobody wants to leave anybody out there.”

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office has assumed the investigation.
