LEE COUNTY, Fla.- People who had old, tattered flags traded them in for brand new stars and stripes.

Sunday is Flag Day, but a Cape Coral business started early with a patriotic gift.

Fuller Metz Funeral Home is one of two area businesses trading old flags for new. They collected two full bags hours before the event even began.

Rachael Roberts-Schad says her business has been sponsoring this trade-out for several years.

“The Fourth of July has its moment, but Flag Day sometimes gets overlooked. It’s just nice to recognize that we are proud to fly our flag, and show support and honor to our military and our veterans.”

Those who took advantage of this gift, had their worn and weathered flags folded by scouts who will properly retire them.

“Something as simple as showing that flag, showing that support, I think it means more to our veterans than we may realize,” said Roberts-Schad.

Fuller Metz collected enough old flags to fill four 55-gallon drums.
