LEHIGH ACRES, Fla.- The Salvation Army’s opening its first-ever service center in Lehigh Acres, a community the charity says desperately needs help. Workers will now be on hand to assist people with things like FPL bills, crisis management, and emergency food. The Salvation Army cut the ribbon to the new center Thursday afternoon. The community has been waiting a long time for a closer Salvation Army location. Residents who needed help used to travel all the way to downtown Fort Myers. Last Christmas, 27 percent of those helped by the Salvation Army came from Lehigh. Those who helped bring this to the community can’t wait to get started. “We’re excited that the Salvation Army’s finally in town. We want other people in the community to come celebrate with us, and we hope that in the days ahead that we help make this great community even better by providing our services,” said Major Tim Gilliam. The center will be open Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m.- noon, and Wednesday from 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. It’s located in the Lehigh Towne Centre plaza at 25 Homestead Road, Unit 42A.
