Lee school board extends Superintendent Dr. Nancy Graham’s contract

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Dr. Nancy Graham will be the superintendent of Lee County Public Schools for another two years.

The school board extended Graham’s contract Tuesday after a heated period of public comment where many parents called for her termination. The board also voted to give Graham $4,000 in bonus money for meeting two of her five district goals.

The goals included increasing district-wide gains in reading by 3 percent, improving all D and F schools by at least one letter grade, and returning the school district to an A grade from its current B status. Graham was also to ensure that all leadership team members received necessary training by June 1 and establish a superintendent advisory board.

Graham was able to meet the last two goals. She couldn’t be judged on the first three because school grades typically aren’t released until July.

Graham’s contract was set to automatically extend unless the board took action before Tuesday’s meeting. They decided not to take any action meaning Graham will be superintendent through June 2017.

Parents who attended the meeting were both in favor and against the extension of Graham’s contract. A number of parents also said they were angry that the decision was made during an early afternoon meeting while many people were working and could not attend.
