Cape Coral city officials block popular car wash from expanding business

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- A popular car wash company is looking to expand but the city is pushing back.

The owners of Downtowners Car Wash say they had no problem opening up a new location on Pine Island Road after their Del Prado shop was so successful. So this time they set their sights on reaching the south Cape. But planning and zoning officials say their business is the wrong fit for Cape Coral Parkway.

The company’s challenging the decision and in just a week, they’ve already gotten more than 1,000 signatures to back them up.

“A lot of our current customers at the Del Prado location are asking when we’re going to be somewhere in the south Cape. So that area is right outside of the core, so we thought it would be a nice fit,” said Troy Montpetit, co-owner of Downtowner Car Wash.

But the city didn’t agree. Planning and zoning officials say that area of Cape Coral Parkway is the gateway to the city and that a car wash is not compatible with their “vision” for the area. Montpetit says he doesn’t understand why the city would block business.

“We were of course naturally just a little disappointed, it came as a little bit of a surprise ’cause we started this back in November planning and kind of meeting with the city staff so that was a little bit of a surprise,” said Montpetit.

He says not only would the car was service a new area, it would bring more jobs.

“We’d be hoping to add at least 20-50 jobs depending on, you know, the demand, of course, for the business there but we think it’s going to be a nice economic boost there for not only jobs but the construction jobs,” said Montpetit.

The company has appealed the decision and will go before City Council with the signatures soon.
