FGCU plans for new roads to ease traffic congestion

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Florida Gulf Coast University hopes to make some big changes. For those who battle daily traffic jams when trying to get on campus, those days may soon be numbered.

FGCU plans to add two new ways to get in and out of campus. Currently, FGCU Lake Parkway and FGCU Boulevard are the only ways to get in and out of campus. Both Roads lead to Ben Hill Griffin Parkway.

Students and professors say the traffic is unbearable whenever a special event is going on.

“It could have taken me five seconds to get to my dorm, but instead I had to go all the way around, go by the soccer complex, go all the way around, there was still traffic,” said student Eliven Cruz.

One new road would be built from Ben Hill Griffin Parkway to South Village. This area has the highest concentration of students. The entrance will be called South Village Road.

The second road will be near North Lake Village and will lead to Alico Road. FGCU is asking the state to fund a portion of the new south entrance, Miromar will fund the other half. The north entrance will be built by a new development next to Lake Como, off Alico Road.

The FGCU Board of Trustees will see the draft Wednesday, June 10. They will review it and in December decide if they want to adopt the plan.
