Scammers hitting Naples hotel guests

NAPLES, Fla.- Scammers are preying on Naples hotel guests.

One New Jersey couple vacationing in Naples thought they would spend time by the pool and at the beach but this trip is anything but relaxing after someone stole their credit card information.

“I’ve commuted to Manhattan for 25 years and worked and taken classes there late at night, and I’ve never had a crime against me, and I come to Naples and the minute I’m here, somebody does this,” said Marie Hannye-Scurato.

According to police reports, almost $2,000 was charged to their account.

“I got a hotel phone call in my room and they said ‘this is the front desk Mrs. Scurato’ and ‘our computer system has gone down and we know you ordered breakfast, so we need to get your credit card number again in order to bring your breakfast,'” said Scurato.

She tells WINK News they got the phone call early in the morning and, half asleep, she gave the card information to the caller.

“I thought because they knew my breakfast order it must be them but it wasn’t. I asked the front desk and they said ‘no, we didn’t call you.’ My husband called the credit card company and within minutes there had been charges on there,” she said.

Security experts say this happens often in hotels everywhere. The scammers call early in the morning or late at night to catch you off guard and get your card information. If you get a call like this, never give information over the phone. Go straight to the front desk.
