FMPD officer resigns after alleged abuse of power

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A police officer caught in a love triangle is accused of using her power to get information about her ex’s new girlfriend.

A report more than 100 pages long describes how former Lieutenant Jenn Soto used law enforcement tools to look up personal information connected to her ex-boyfriend’s fiance.

The internal affairs report lists in detail how police say Soto abused her power.

The document states Soto used the driver and vehicle information database known as D.A.V.I.D to look up private information on her ex-boyfriend’s fiance.

Authorities say it started on Facebook where the two exchanged a heated conversation. Soto was quoted as saying “I don’t do well angry.”

Days later, the new fiance says she got a strange call from State Farm insurance asking about her policy.

The woman, who is a waitress, knew something was off and talked to a long-time customer about it. That man just happened to be Jay Murphy, Cape Coral Police Department’s former police chief.

Murphy suggested she request certain documents and that’s when she learned that Soto used the D.A.V.I.D. system to look her up and gain access to her social security number and other personal information.

“These mechanisms for law enforcement to do research on individuals are protected for legitimate purposes, legitimate law enforcement activities,” said attorney Scott Moorey.

He says officers of the law are held to a higher standard and wouldn’t be surprised if the victim takes legal action.

“She’s got a possible suit against the department, she’s got a possible suit against the individual,” said Moorey.

The investigation concluded that Soto should be terminated. WINK News learned she resigned before that could happen.
