Bees swarm Marco Island neighborhood

MARCO ISLAND, Fla.- Around 20,000 bees swarmed a Marco Island neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

Firefighters tell WINK News the bees were aggressive, but luckily no one was hurt.

“I’ve never seen that many bees on a call before,” said Marco Island firefighter Sergio Deleon.

Deleon has been on many bee calls before, but this one was definitely the busiest.

“We got dispatched originally to a call of about 20,000 bees in the park. They were around the house, around a bunch of bushes and stuff.”

The bees were swarming around a home on South Heathwood Drive.

Deleon says firefighters immediately began putting foam on the bees.

“The bees, they breathe through their abdomen wall and stuff so you apply a layer of foam on top of them with the water, it kind of sticks to them and knocks them down to the ground.”

Deleon says typically the fire departments calls a bee expert in to remove them, but these bees were too close to Mackle Park.

“It seemed they were those Africanized bees that do chase you down.”

Luckily, no one was hurt.

“Our captain did have a bunch of bees sticking to him but he didn’t get stung at all,” said Deleon.
