Noise complaints increase as Punta Gorda Airport sees more passengers

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. – This year, Punta Gorda Airport is seeing a lot more passengers. Already almost 300,000 people have flown through the airport.

“I think that most everyone here benefits from the commercial, even though you get a little bit of noise every once in a while but they all benefit from the commercial flights coming in and out,” said resident Michael Peat.

Allegiant Air has about six to nine flights a day. Some people say it’s a good sign, showing progress in the economy. However, as flights increased, so have the noise complaints.

“It’s kinda like a motorcycle with no muffler on it type of thing, so they are really loud and the newer equipment is much much quieter, I mean you really do hear a difference,” said Peat.

Last month Punta Gorda Airport received about 50 noise complaints. In the past, Allegiant Air has tried to work with the public and reroute flights. They limited departures from the southwest, but they couldn’t change all routes over neighborhoods.

WINK News uncovered Allegiant Air is considering switching their fleet to newer and quieter jets.
