New Orleans police officer killed in patrol car

NEW ORLEANS- A New Orleans on duty police officer was shot and killed while guarding a public housing construction site Sunday morning.

The 45-year-old officer, whose name has not been released, was shot inside a patrol car. New Orleans Police say the cruiser rolled for at least one or two blocks before hitting a curb and stopping.

New Orleans Housing Authority Police Chief Robert Anderson says, “It is such a tragic loss.  We have never had an on duty death in the department’s history.”

Police say the officer was working overtime to guard to a construction site. They say he had been on the job since 2013.

Investigators are searching for the suspects and no arrests have been made so far.
