FORT MYERS, Fla. – Memorial Day allows us to remember the military men and women who lost their lives serving our country.

There are a number of ways you can show your support around Southwest Florida.

Cape Coral will be named a Purple Heart City. The mayor will make the proclamation at the Southwest Florida Military Museum.

The city says it will find new ways to honor citizens who received Purple Hearts, including posted signs with the designation.  There will also be a color guard, 21 gun salute and a flag pole dedication at the museum.

At 9 a.m. in Bonita Springs, a Memorial Day ceremony will be held at Riverside Park. Event features musical tributes and a 21 gun salute.

From 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. the Lee County Mosquito and Hyacinth Control will host an open house. You can stop by the facility on Homestead Road in Lehigh Acres. You can view a big display of air crafts and equipment.

The Edison and Ford Winter Estates is offering free entry for veterans and their families. It’s open from 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

If you feel like taking a walk on the wild side, the Naples Zoo is offering free entry for a child, with a coupon and a paying adult. There is also a discount for veterans. The zoo is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
