Pipe bombs found inside Cape Coral home

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- WINK News has new information about nine pipe bombs found inside a golf bag at a home.

Police say it’s fortunate the bombs didn’t go off and hurt someone.

The bomb squad blew up the pipe bombs Wednesday night near the 4500 block of 27th Street Northwest.

Officers made contact with Elmon Burton, who say that he found what he believed to be pipe bombs located in a golf bag that he was given as a gift a couple of months ago.

The golf bag used to belong to a friend of Burton’s, Ronald Torres, who is now deceased.

Burton was examining the bag for the first time the day Tuesday, when he found several PVC pipes with end-caps and what appeared to be fuses coming from the center of the pipe inside of the bag.

Burton contacted a Lee County Sheriff Office deputy that lives in the neighborhood. Lee County Sheriff’s Office immediately contacted Cape Coral Police Communications. Elmon Burton placed the bag in an open field across the street from his house.

Cape Coral Police officers responded and set up a perimeter, blocking off any entry near the vacant lot where the golf bag was left.

A bomb squad arrived and confirmed that nine devices in the bag were in fact live pipe bombs. Authorities say Torres suffered from paranoia and most likely made the pipe bombs prior to his death.

Carmen Arguello, the daughter of Teodra Torres, stated that the golf bag belonged to her deceased father and they were unaware of any explosive devices that were found in the bag.
