Group lobbying for dog beach in Collier County

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- If you love the beach and want to spend time with your four-legged friends in the sand, you may be in luck.

The first ever dog beach in Collier County may be in the future. Wednesday a group gathered, asking the county to consider their request.

“All cities have dog beaches– New York, California every place I’ve ever lived. So why not Naples, Florida?” said Ed O’Brien.

O’Brien was one of many at a meeting, asking the county for a section of beach in the county to be dog friendly, at least for the summer. But there are a lot of concerns, like sanitation and protecting wildlife such as turtle nesting areas.

“They’ll see what kind of stewards we are. We’ll take care of the beach,” said O’Brien.

To prove it, some are asking for part of the beach to be open to dogs only one day a week as a trial period.

The county says the next step would be to research the location and find out how the dogs would impact wildlife.
