Estero Fire Rescue shows WINK News the challenges they face when responding to a call

ESTERO, Fla.- Only WINK News is getting an inside look at how crews respond to medical emergencies.

WINK News spent the day with Estero Fire Rescue and found out, one of the most challenging situations crews run into when going to a call is the other drivers on the road.

“It’s almost like that fire truck is a mouse going through a maze,” said Battalion Chief Dale Reisen.

When seconds matter the most, responding to a medical emergency has proven to difficult for first responders in Estero.

“Traffic has tripled, it’s harder to get to calls now, people don’t realize or can’t hear us to get out of the way,” said Paramedic Dennis Goodlad.

Paramedics and EMTs with Estero Fire Rescue say even with lights and sirens blaring, drivers just aren’t moving out of the way fast enough.

“Those trucks are so heavy, with so much equipment on them and so much water they can’t stop on a dime,” said Reisen.

As part of EMS week, the crew invited WINK News to spend a day with them to see the problem for ourselves. We only ran two medical calls, but we did notice drivers not pulling over, or just stopping in their tracks.

“Daily, you are always wondering what is this person thinking? It happens all the time,” said firefighter Shaun Hagan.

These every day heroes say this doesn’t delay response times significantly, it’s just frustrating because their number their goal is to get to a call safely and quickly.

“It does slow us a little, not by minutes, probably like 30 seconds,” said Goodlad.

Pictures from February, show a driver crossing the intersection at Three Oakes and Estero Parkway. The driver said he didn’t hear or see the EMS truck and the two collided.

“It takes that unit out of service. Dispatch has to add another unit to go that call which is further away.”

Now, Estero Fire Rescue says 80 percent of the calls they run are medical calls. Last year, they ran over 2,800 medical calls and the numbers pulled Wednesday show this year they have ran over 1,480.
