Canterbury freshman rescued from North Carolina mountainside

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A Canterbury School freshman is recovering from minor injuries after falling and hitting his head during a school-related hiking trip near Morganton, North Carolina Monday afternoon.

WINK News has confirmed the student, Edward Zurita, 15, was released from a local hospital early Tuesday morning.

According to officials, Zurita was hiking near Table Rock Mountain when he tripped over a fallen tree and hit his head.

It took roughly 30 people more than an hour to carry Zurita on a stretcher down the steep mountainside Monday evening.

His brother Eric tells WINK News that Zurita and about 50 of his fellow classmates left for North Carolina Saturday to take part in a five-day hiking excursion led by the non-profit organization “Outward Bound.”

“A coordinator from Outward Bound, she was at the base camp, she called me and she basically told me that my brother had suffered an injury, she wasn’t very specific because she didn’t know too many details. They were great, they handled it really well,” Zurita’s brother Eric told WINK News.

Zurita is a rising star on the Canterbury boys varsity basketball team. Aside from his safety, concern for his future in sports quickly jumped to the front of his brother’s mind.

“I was very afraid because he’s had a concussion before. So I was afraid that he had lost consciousness again, and… that that would put his basketball playing in jeopardy,” said Eric.

According to officials, Zurita suffered a non-life threatening injury to the head and was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution.

“He’s ok, he suffered a small crack in a vertebrae in his lower back but that just heals with time so he’ll be alright. He’s resting the rest of today at the base camp and hopefully tomorrow he’ll be able to join his friends again,” said Eric.

Eric says this is the first time his brother has been hiking.
