Talks of first-ever Collier County dog beach

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla.- A group in Collier County is getting together starting a petition to show support for a dog beach.

The group has already reached out to leaders. There will be a meeting on May 20 to discuss the possibility.

“I think there is a lot of research that needs to be done,” said Daniel Christenbury who works with Collier County Public Services. “Wildlife is one, sanitation is an issue. There are a lot of factors that go into having a dog beach.”

“My dog would love it, we are all about exercise and fitness,” said Pam McCamon. She says if there were a dog beach, she would bring her dog from up north down to Naples. “The beach is a part of my life and I want it to be a part of her life as well.”

The proposal from the group to the county is to allow dogs in a designated area of a beach during the summer months. They are asking for one day a week as a trial period to see if it works and stays clean.

“I saw it on Facebook and I said ‘oh my gosh, a petition? We have to sign it,” said McCamon.

The meeting on May 20 will take place at 2 p.m. The public will be able to come and give their input. It will be held at the North Collier Regional Park in the Administration building, Room A.
