Barron Collier alum recaps Draft Day.

Barron Collier alum Jeff Heuerman is now living his dream.

“Four years of college and four years of high school,” said Heuerman, “it’s a lot of time built up to one night and one phone call.”

On May 1, Heuerman got the phone call he’d been waiting on for a long time.
“I was sitting right here and just kept staring at my phone hoping it would ring,” said Heuerman. “Finally it did, so I was super pumped.”

The Denver Broncos selected the former Ohio State tight end in the third round of the NFL Draft.

“It’s special. As an athlete you want to be a part of a great team, great organization, and that’s what the Denver Broncos are,” said Heuerman.

A month earlier, at the NFL Combine, Heuerman thought he had really impressed Broncos’ General Manager John Elway.

“I didn’t hear from them after the combine,” said Heuerman. “I didn’t hear from them at all. So I thought maybe I had said something wrong,  or it didn’t go as well as I thought it went.”

“I talked to [Elway] about it when I was up there… ‘What happened, I never heard from you?'” Heuerman said jokingly.

When he did hear from the Broncos, Heuerman got around 1,300 text messages, including one from his new quarterback.

“Peyton Manning was probably the most unexpected text,” said Heuerman.

“I had a bunch of texts coming through and I just happened to click on his, he just said congratulations on getting drafted, and that he was excited to work with me, and he couldn’t wait to get started.”

Heuerman reports to rookie camp this Thursday.
