FMPD fires officer for lying

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A Fort Myers officer, and former Rotary Club Officer of the Year, was fired from the department for lying. Fuller was fired two weeks ago, after serving almost five years on the force.

The department says in November 2014, Fuller left an overtime shift without telling anyone, then lied about his whereabouts when confronted.

An internal affairs report says around 2 a.m., dispatch tried to call him over the radio but Fuller never answered, even after several tries.

Other officers in the area checked, but were unable to locate him.

Two minutes later, investigators say Fuller responded, saying he was in the bathroom at a nearby RaceTrac. Video from the gas station later proved he was never inside.

At the same time, another officer on shift said he had seen Fuller at his house earlier in the night. When Fuller was asked about that, he said he couldn’t remember.

Fuller also said he couldn’t remember leaving his post. He claimed he had lost several family members recently, and had “zoned out in prayer,” while talking on the phone with a friend.

The investigation also says a month before this incident, Fuller left another shift and went home. That time he told other officers he was sick and apologized for not telling his boss.

Fuller’s attorney told the city council Monday night, he plans to file a grievance, which would allow Fuller to appeal the decision.
