CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla.- A Port Charlotte doctor will have to payout big after a $23 million medical malpractice verdict.

A jury found Dr. Michael Coffey at Bayfront Health Port Charlotte was 70 percent responsible for a baby being born with a severe brain injury in 2010.

The hospital, which was then Peace River Regional, was found 30 percent at fault.

The mother says she visited the doctor during her pregnancy, seeking treatment for decreased fetal movement and high protein levels.

The hospital confirms Dr. Coffey is still on staff.
