Southwest Florida International launches flights to Puerto Rico

LEE COUNTY, Fla. – Sunday Southwest Florida International launched flights to Puerto Rico and announced it will soon be offering flights to Cancun.

Sun Country Airlines launched its first flight from RSW to San Juan, Puerto Rico Sunday afternoon. Originally, the airline had only planned to offer the direct flight for the summer months, but it announced Sunday it will be running the flights for an entire year.

WINK News talked to passengers, who were thrilled to have the new, convenient flight in their backyard.

“This is my first time flying from here in a year and a half that I don’t have to drive to Ft. Lauderdale, so this is a bargain. I’m so happy, and I’ll try to get my parents down here too,” said one passenger.

Meanwhile, Sun Country announced they plan to start flying to Cancun in the near future. They said flights will go on sale in the next month.

“We feel like this is an under served area in the Caribbean and in Mexico. It was so strong when we started and introduced the San Juan service we began looking at other opportunities and Cancun was a natural for us,” said Eric Curry, the Vice President of Sun Country sales.
