ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Visitors will have to pass through metal detectors placed outside three roller coasters to deter them from taking keys, phones, loose change and other items on the rides.

The Orlando theme park tested the metal detectors last month in an effort to keep visitors safe from flying objects. They have decided to make the fixtures permanent.

Universal Orlando spokesman Tom Schroder told the Orlando Sentinel the metal detectors are a response to the things “people are carrying in their pockets these days.” He says the items “have no place” on high-speed rides.

The devices are installed at Universal Studios Florida’s 17-story Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit and at Universal’s Islands of Adventure’s Dragon Challenge and Incredible Hulk Roller Coaster.

Guest can store items in free lockers stationed at the rides.
