Cape Coral wins $2.7M settlement from LCEC, may use money on roads

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Cape Coral roads desperately in need of paving might get a facelift.

The money for the project isn’t coming from residents, but from a lawsuit settlement with LCEC.

The company and City of Cape Coral were at odds on who would pay to have utility poles relocated during a street widening project in 2010.

After the city won the court battle, LCEC now has to pay a $2.7 million settlement. The Public Works Department is looking to use the money to improve roads.

“It’s very fortunate for the City of Cape Coral,” said Public Works Director, Steve Neff, “and the timing is very helpful for us. This allows us to do some early paving in our five-year paving plans.”

Residents in north and south Cape Coral have voiced concerns about the roads in their neighborhood. While his crew isn’t sure what roads they want to resurface with the settlement money, Neff says plenty of them could use some work.

“We would rather be repaving and resurfacing roads before the citizens complain. That’s the ideal plan,” said Neff.

City Council will make an official decision on whether or not they want to spend the money on resurfacing roads on Monday.
