Cape Coral City Council approves extended bar hours

Published: Updated:

CAPE CORAL, Fla.- Cape Coral City Council members approved a measure Monday night to extend bar hours to 4 a.m. on weekends in the South Cape Entertainment District. The new rules could begin as early as this weekend.

It was a contentious meeting at Cape Coral City Hall, as neighbors and business owners lined up to give their opinions.

Some said extending hours will be an economic driver for the area but others say it will bring more rowdy crowds.

The new law passed 5-3 and will be tested for one year. Restaurants and bars must get a permit before they can stay open later.

They’ll also have to hire an off-duty Cape Coral Police Officer for extra security and have surveillance cameras. If an establishment has too many violations, it can lose its permit.
