Traffic stop leads to arrest of felon with assault rifle

FORT MYERS, Fla.- A traffic stop leads police to arrest a convicted felon carrying an assault rifle.

Sunday, around 9:18 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance at 766 Marsh Avenue. A resident told police her boyfriend’s son, 26-year-old Jorge Reina, was at the residence demanding his father’s truck. Officers learned Reina had already left in a vehicle but threatened physical harm to the complainant if the truck was not released.

Authorities began searching for Reina who was said to be driving a green Pontiac Sunfire. Approximately five minutes later, police located the Pontiac heading north on Marsh Avenue.

Officers conducted a traffic stop as the suspect vehicle pulled back into the home on Marsh Avenue.

Police noticed a Norinco SKS assault rifle lying on the front passenger seat. The rifle was loaded with six rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition. Reina was quickly removed from the vehicle and detained.

A records check revealed Reina is not only a convicted felon unable to possess lawfully possess a firearm but was also flagged as a documented “Latin King” gang member through the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

“We cannot say what Reina’s intentions were going back to the scene but given the circumstances they were probably not good,” said police spokesperson Lieutenant Victor Medico.

Reina was charged with possession of a firearm by convicted felon, possession of ammunition by convicted felon and possession of a firearm by a gang-related felon. Reina is currently being held without bond.
