Fort Myers plane crash victim dies

ESTERO, Fla.- WINK News confirms a passenger on board a plane that crashed near Page Field has died.

Lee Memorial Hospital confirms 85-year-old Donna Piehl passed away.

Her son, Greg Piehl, who piloted the plane is out of the hospital.

The plane crashed on March 9 in the parking lot of the White Sands Treatment Center on Colonial Boulevard in Fort Myers.

“She was very nice, we saw her all the time walking her dog in the neighborhood, she was friendly just a very nice person,” said neighbor Betty Hipolite.

Those who knew Piehl are heartbroken after hearing of her passing. Some thought she had been getting better.

“I was just shocked to hear that she had died,” said Hipolite. “I’m so sorry that she passed away and I know that it must be very sad.”

Piehl battled for two weeks before succumbing to her injuries.

Other neighbors tell WINK News Piehl was a wonderful person who had a beautiful spirit.

Federal investigators are still trying to determine what caused the crash.
