Pine Island residents worried about future development

Published: Updated:

LEE COUNTY, Fla.- Hundreds of people packed the Lee County commission meeting, demanding that developers stay out of Pine Island.

Commissioners talked about the future of the community on Tuesday.

The Pine Island Plan restricts development, and because of that Lee County faces eight lawsuits and 50 other claims from land owners.

Residents say the plan violates their property rights. The agricultural giant King Ranch of Texas owns land on the island.

There’s only one road off the island and people believe, adding to the population could jam the roads and endanger lives in a hurricane evacuation.

About 300 people showed up to the meeting Tuesday, to let commissioners know they want no major changes to the plan.
